Author(s): Lamia Shaker Ahmed and Bashar Nasr al-Din Hattab

Abstract: The phenomenon of intellectual extremism is one of the most significant challenges facing societies, particularly in Iraq and other regions experiencing conflicts and wars. Such circumstances often lead to ideological imbalances among youth and society, fostering intellectual extremism. To understand this phenomenon, identify its types, causes, manifestations, and methods of combating it, we have divided this research into two main sections. The first section defines intellectual extremism, while the second focuses on preventive methods and legal legislations and their role in combating intellectual extremism. In conclusion, the study presents several findings and recommendations. Among the most important findings is that intolerance of opinions, ideological deviation, and the lack of stability across economic, social, and political levels are among the key causes of intellectual extremism. Regarding the recommendations, the study emphasizes the need for Iraqi legislators to address intellectual extremism by enacting robust legal provisions to combat this phenomenon. This includes incorporating such measures into specific laws, such as the amended Iraqi Penal Code No. (111) of 1969 and the amended Anti-Terrorism Law No. (13) of 2005.
