Handicrafts and need for legal protection: A case study of Kani Shawl and its registration under Geographical Indications (GI) of Goods Act of India
Author(s): Yaseer Ahmad Mir
Abstract: When it comes to Kashmiri shawls, the Kani shawl is among the most well-known hand-woven styles. A single item of this handcraft requires a number of stages, labour, expertise, and time, and it has been practised in the area for generations. Each piece of Kani is carefully woven by highly talented Kashmiri weavers using a variety of thread colours. A shawl generally takes a weaver a period of six months to a year or more to complete, depending on the size and intricacy of the design. A lot of handspan pashmina is used in the entirely handcrafted Kani shawl-making technique. In order to guard against misuse and imitation, the Kani shawl has been registered under the Geographical Indications (GI) Act of India. Understanding the creation of the Kani shawl and its registration under the Geographical Indications (GI) Act is the goal of this paper.
